Murdough Greenhouse at Dartmouth College
Architect: Unclear (Campbell, Aldrich & Nulty or Bohlin Cywinski Jackson)
A 6,000-square-foot facility situated atop the Class of 1978 Life Sciences Center in Hanover, New Hampshire. Opened in August 2011, this greenhouse serves as a living botanical museum, supporting research, education, and public engagement.
The greenhouse comprises various climate-controlled rooms, including tropical, subtropical, xeric (succulent and cactus), and specialized orchid rooms, each designed to replicate distinct ecosystems. Notably, it houses the Brout Orchid Collection and “Morphy,” the greenhouse’s renowned corpse flower.
Beyond its role in scientific research, the greenhouse is integral to Dartmouth’s educational mission, serving as a resource for courses in biology, studio art, photography, and creative writing. It also welcomes the public during designated hours, offering a unique opportunity for visitors to explore diverse plant species and learn about global biodiversity.
